Italian Rooster Pitcher Legend
THE LEGEND OF THE ROOSTER PITCHER
The famous Italian Ceramic Italian Rooster Pitcher symbolizes "Good Fortune" and/or "Good Luck" and is believed to protect one from dangers. It is an Italian tradition to give a ceramic Italian rooster pitcher to a friend or relative, ideally as a housewarming or wedding gift. Some people will even buy an Italian rooster pitcher for themselves to bring "Good Fortune" and/or "Good Luck" to their homes. These rooster pitchers are commonly used for wine, though can be used for any beverage. We suggest filling it up with juice and using it for breakfast or a brunch. Kids even love having their favorite beverage poured from a rooster pitcher. Each rooster pitcher purchased comes with the story/legend of the Italian Rooster Pitcher written on a small scroll. The origin of the "Rooster Pitcher" dates back to the early Renaissance period in the Republic of Florence in Italy. During this time, one of the most powerful and leading landowning families, the Medici’s, held a feast in the nearby village of Gallina for their peasants. Later that night after the feast while everyone was asleep, a rival family sent assassins to assassinate a leading member of the Medici family to gain power. The assassination attempt failed when the roosters in the yards in and around the village started cackling, which in turn awoke the leading member of the Medici family and their guards. The assassins were caught and executed. In honor of the roosters, artisans were commissioned by the Medici family to create ceramic replicas of the roosters to be used as wine pitchers. These "Rooster Pitchers" had various artwork and designs painted on them. The "Rooster Pitchers" were then given to the peasants and friends for good luck against danger.
